What is Mud Wrestling?
Mud wrestling has a rich cultural history in India, often linked to traditional wrestling forms like “Kushti.” Kushti is a form of wrestling practiced in clay pits, typically in rural areas, and is deeply rooted in Indian culture. Wrestlers, known as “Pehelwans,” train rigorously, often under the guidance of a guru in “akhadas” (wrestling schools).
While Kushti is more about the sport and physical prowess, mud wrestling in the contemporary sense—often characterized by entertainment and playful competition—has gained popularity in urban settings and events, particularly as a form of entertainment at festivals or parties.
The origins of wrestling in India date back thousands of years, with references found in ancient texts like the Mahabharata. The traditional practice emphasizes discipline, strength, and technique, and it has evolved over time to include various forms and styles.
